But I wouldn't have said that back then.

On March 1, 2009, I quit my supposedly secure, well-paid job as a retail executive. No grand vision, no master plan. Just this insatiable urge to make a dent in the universe. The desire to leave something behind that counts. Something that is more than a paycheck and a title on a business card.

What followed was not a success story in a straight line. It was a rollercoaster of ups, downs, doubts, setbacks and moments I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. 17 years in which I learned what it really means to build a business, to be a brand and to get up every day with conviction.

In these 17 years I was able to speak around the world, have written 14 books, translated into 7 languages, won awards and worked with the best brands in the world. Clients who have been booking me again and again for years and whose trust I am proud of every day.

And yet: no one wins alone. That is perhaps the most important lesson of all.

But let's start from the beginning. Here are my 17 biggest learnings from 17 years Independence.

1. one sale a day. Every day. Not when it suits.

The Mindset of the „One Sale a Day“ was one of my biggest levers. If you are self-employed, you have to sell. Period. Not at some point, not when the conditions are perfect, but every day. One active sales action per day, consistently and without excuses. This one principle has changed my business more than any tool or hack I've ever tried.

2. the foundation beats all hacks. Always.

Values, Purpose, identity. That sounds like soft stuff, but it's the hardest foundation you can have. If you know what you stand for, you make better decisions. Decisions, attracts the right customers and survives crises with a clarity that no tool in the world can replace. All hacks, all methods, all strategies are built on this foundation. Without it, you are building on sand.

3. structure first, then delegate and automate.

Many self-employed people delegate the wrong things at the wrong time. First define your structure, your processes, your standards. Only then hand over. You can't delegate what you don't understand yourself. And what you don't delegate eats up your time, your energy and ultimately your growth.

4. everyone must be proficient in sales and marketing.

There is no excuse. No „that's not my thing“, no „I have someone for that“. Sales and marketing are the lifelines of every business. If you don't understand them, you are dependent on others. Those who master them are free. And Freedom has always been my goal.

5. personal branding is essential for survival.

Not „nice to have“. Not a nice extra. Vital for survival. In a world where everyone offers everything and everyone sounds the same, your personality is your sharpest differentiator. Who you are, how you think, what you stand for. Nobody can copy that.

6. if you don't run your business by the numbers, you're driving blind.

Know your most important KPIs. Turnover, margin, conversion, rebooking rate, whatever counts for your business. Numbers don't lie. Gut feeling is good, gut feeling plus numbers is better. If you know the figures, you can control them. If you don't know them, you're just reacting.

7 Imposter syndrome never disappears.

No matter how successful you become, no matter how many stages, books and awards you have. Imposter syndrome will regularly knock on your door. The difference between those who fail and those who keep going is not the lack of doubt. It's the decision to keep going anyway.

8. do YOUR thing. Pleasing everyone doesn't work anyway.

The more successful you become, the more grumblers will crawl out of their holes. This is a natural law of self-employment. The solution is not to please everyone. The solution is to be so clear in your identity that criticism informs you instead of shaking you. Do YOUR thing. The right people will love it.

9 Lifelong learning is mandatory.

Not an option. Not a hobby. A duty. The world is changing faster than ever before, and if you stop learning, you stop being relevant. This applies to professional knowledge as well as personal growth. Invest in your development, every year, without compromise.

10. produce content instead of frying your brain with doomscrolling.

Content is the proof of your expertise. It works while you sleep. It builds trust before anyone has even exchanged a word with you. And it positions you as a voice in your market. The time you spend doomscrolling is time you could be investing in visibility.

11. YOU are the business.

Every decision you make, every statement you make, every energy you radiate. All of it is your business. That is a huge Responsibility and at the same time the greatest freedom there is. Always think, decide and act accordingly.

12. set aside taxes immediately. Always.

Set aside enough of each income immediately for the various taxes, preferably with automated sub-accounts. The income that ends up in your account is not entirely yours. If you internalize this early on, you'll avoid nasty surprises and sleep better.

13. find coaches and mentors who tell you the truth.

Not those who tell you what you want to hear. Those who tell you what you need to hear. A good Coach is not a cheerleader, he is a mirror. Those who bring such people into their lives grow faster, make fewer avoidable mistakes and come out of difficult phases more clearly.

14 Discipline beats inspiration every day.

Good processes, clear standards and consistent discipline are more important than the next creative flash of inspiration. Inspiration comes and goes. Discipline stays. Those who wait for inspiration to be productive usually wait too long. Those who build systems also produce when the Motivation is on vacation.

15. always hold 6 to 12 months reserve. Not negotiable.

Independence means freedom, but this freedom needs a foundation. If you have no reserve, you make decisions out of fear instead of strength. Accepts orders that he should turn down. Lowers prices that he should keep. Having 6 to 12 months of annual income in reserve is not a luxury. They are the prerequisite for real entrepreneurial freedom.

16 Your health is your most valuable asset.

You are the business. And if you fail, the business fails. Sleep, exercise, nutrition, mental health. These are not wellness trends, they are business strategies. Those who protect their health like their most valuable asset, because that's exactly what it is, will have a decisive advantage in the long term.

17 Enjoy the journey. Because life is a verb.

The next milestone is not the goal. The next book, the next stage, the next number. Life doesn't happen at some point when everything is perfect. It happens right here, right now, in this moment. Enjoy the journey. Not despite the rollercoaster, but because of it.

No one wins alone.

As proud as I am of everything that these 17 years have brought, I also know that none of these figures, no stage, no book, no award would ever have played a role if I had gone down this path alone.

This text is therefore a huge thank you to everyone who has shared this journey with me. Customers, partners, readers, colleagues, companions, critics, friends and yes, even the haters, without whom I would never be where I am today.

But the biggest thanks go to YOU.

From the heart, your Ilya

Vor 17 Jahren habe ich die beste Entscheidung meines Lebens getroffen.
