The UnChange Mindset Model - change beyond the self-optimization mania

Mindset – Die traditionelle Definition

Denn warum scheitert Marketing so häufig?

Genau so entsteht nachhaltige Veränderung.

Preventing and breaking through unconscious self-sabotage

Vielleicht kommen Ihnen einige davon ja bekannt vor: Sitz still. Pass Dich an. Mach Deine Hausaufgaben. Hinterfrage nicht. Befolge die Anweisungen der Lehrer. Lerne auswendig. Vermeide Risiken. Tue das, was alle tun. Schlag Dir die Träumereien aus dem Kopf. Tu das, was alle tun.

I had to learn to unlearn everything I had grown up with. What had been drilled into me at school for years. I had to discard the messages from the past and redefine who I wanted to be. What I believe in. And which Mindset should drive me. There is a direct connection between the results in our lives and our current mindset, which you can imagine as follows.

Mindset Modell deutsch

Your behavior is always a direct reflection of your mindset.

Ihr Mindset beeinflusst das gesamte Leben. Immer.

The more a behavior attacks our current mindset, the more we will unconsciously do everything we can to postpone or even completely prevent this behavior.

Please note that this process takes place completely unconsciously, even if you are rationally guided by your Targets are convinced. Nevertheless, people are true artists at unconsciously sabotaging all these consciously expressed intentions in order to preserve their own identity and the convictions that go with it.

  • Or my absolute favorite: change has to be hard for it to work.

By the time we are teenagers at the latest, we have developed a mindset that serves as a compass for our lives. We have learned what is good and what is bad. What to do and what not to do. What place fate has assigned us and what our future will look like. And since the mass of messages we have been bombarded with has tended to be negative, the mass of our beliefs is correspondingly limiting. The result: despite our best intentions, we sabotage ourselves and struggle with the constant feeling that we are running into a glass wall. Because our behavior is always a reflection of our mindset. And what is even more insidious is that we are completely unaware of all this.

Of course, I know that these values don't sound particularly sexy in times when everyone just wants to live in the moment and have all their needs met immediately. But not only is it worthwhile, it can also be a lot of fun. If you look at the illustration, you can see the 4-step process at a glance.

Unbewusste Selbstsabotage: Das Wenn-Dann-Schema

  • You're driving down the highway hungry and spot the glowing M of a large fast food chain. Although you want to eat healthily, you pull off at the exit and order a double cheeseburger with fries and a milkshake (you know, I got this example from a friend)

Lernen, zu verlernen in vier Stufen

In each of these examples, the respective trigger ensures that an automatic program is unwound. Your subconscious doesn't care whether it's something positive or negative. Only one thing is important: when X happens, it reacts with Y. This leads to a crucial insight. If we are dissatisfied with Y, then we have to start with X.

Stufe 1: Bewusstheit

Welche Gedanken Sie in welchen Situationen denken. Welche Strategie Ihre Decisions determined. And which patterns you can recognize in your behaviour. At first, this will seem like an almost impossible task. No wonder, because where your everyday life was on autopilot not long ago, you are now taking the wheel into your own hands. But mindfulness can also be trained. And the more consciously you become of the many processes that were previously completely unconscious, the easier step two will be for you.

Stufe 2: Verlernen

Here we go:

  • Limiting beliefs
  • Poor decision-making strategies
  • Negative thought patterns
  • Unnecessary assumptions
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Emotional reactions
  • Unfounded prejudices
  • The tendency to look for excuses as to why something doesn't work
  • The focus on problems
  • Excessive doubting
  • The tendency to justify oneself
  • The urge for perfectionism
  • The stories you tell yourself every day

Self-optimization mania - the biggest enemy of sustainable change

The biggest obstacle to happiness, Success and satisfaction in life is the self-optimization mania. This phenomenon is the reason why a lot of open, innovative and positive people have great difficulty in actively shaping their future. Even though they have understood that Changes are as much a part of life as the air we breathe, and that a lack of mental growth inevitably leads to dreariness, dissatisfaction and frustration.

Do you also belong to this category? Then you may be struggling with a largely ignored problem. I'm talking about the tendency to want to change too much. Yes, you read that right. Even if Change is a wonderful thing, it is important, as always in life, to find the right balance. Or as the doctor puts it Paracelsus as early as the 15th century: All things are poison, and nothing is without poison. Only the dose makes a thing not a poison.“

An end to the self-optimization mania

If you overdo it with the changes, this leads to a phenomenon known as self-optimization mania with a precision reminiscent of Swiss clockwork. The ever-increasing pressure to fight the status quo with all your might. And this is accompanied by an almost compulsive urge for supposed improvement, new stimuli and permanent restlessness.

The results of this state are even more dangerous than the well-known resistance to change. Driven by an inner dissatisfaction, you become your biggest critic, try out new ways at random and overdo it with the optimization of supposed weak points. Until the formerly positive approach turns into a self-reinforcing negative spiral characterized by fear, pressure and a tendency towards actionism. It doesn't matter whether something makes sense or not, the main thing is that something has changed.

Why the urge for self-optimization is so treacherous

But that is not enough. This process, which is both gradual and unconscious, inevitably leads to a lack of energy, permanent stress and excessive demands. And ultimately leads to you being much unhappier than all the vested interests, status quo defenders and those clinging to the past put together. And this despite doing everything on a conscious level to achieve the exact opposite.

Various empirical studies prove the negative effects of constant pressure to change on our psyche and general health, but common sense also suggests the same conclusion. Don't you know people who have simply overdone it with change over time? Who have changed their behavior, their communication, their Beliefs, have optimized their work processes and their supposed weaknesses for so long that they no longer have any rough edges because they are completely polished? In their self-optimization mania, these people have not even noticed that they have long since passed the tipping point at which their originally positive Changes have taken on a life of their own.

The tipping point of change

What do I mean by that? That fundamentally good qualities can become counterproductive or even destructive at a certain point. Let me give you a few examples. Would you agree that love is a beautiful thing? Okay, that was a rhetorical question. But what happens when you overdo it, when you love obsessively? Then this actually positive quality eventually leads to obsession and burdensome clinginess. Desirable thriftiness turns into stinginess if it is constantly exaggerated. Skepticism becomes paranoia. And openness can easily tip over into arbitrariness at some point. I could go on and on, but I think it's clear what I'm getting at, isn't it?

To illustrate the tipping point in the context of change, let's look at the typical daily routine of a fictional person who wants nothing more than to lead a successful and happy life. To make it a little more vivid, let's call this person Uwe, who recently quit his well-paid job as an IT administrator in a large corporation to follow his passion and start his own business. Uwe is not yet able to formulate exactly what his business model looks like, but he has a clear sense that it is the business of his heart.

An (almost) true story about the self-optimization mania

Driven by the popular messages on social media, the advice in books and the calendar sayings in relevant YouTube videos, Uwe has made it his mission not to leave his personal development to chance. That's why he gets up at 5 o'clock in the morning. Why is that? It's quite simple. Uwe is a member of the famous 5am Club. While others are still asleep, Uwe is already working on personal development. Even though he is actually a night person.

Tired and sleepy, he starts the day with an hour in the gym, where he prepares himself for the day with an intensive EMS workout and a new yoga technique. After a cold shower, a meditation session is on the agenda, followed by filling out the success journal. Uwe then has breakfast at 7 o'clock. However, as he tracks his calories precisely with an app, instead of bread rolls with Nutella he only has a Bullet Proof Coffee, because someone once told Uwe that this is the true breakfast for champions.

Hungry but determined, he then visualizes his Goals for the day, which he has written down using the SMART formula. However, as this alone is not enough, he supports the process with appropriate affirmations, which he recites in front of the mirror and concludes with his personal power pose. He has used the Eisenhower matrix to set his to-do list for the morning, and to ensure he is as productive as possible, he uses the Pomodoro technique to make the most of his limited time. During the few breaks he takes, he always finds inspiration on Instagram, where he follows the crème de la crème of the motivational industry, who regularly provide him with quotes that remind him how important it is to be an eagle and definitely not a chicken.

Uwe's stomach is starting to growl really loudly, because because he follows the philosophy of intermittent fasting, he is only allowed to eat solid food between 12 noon and 8 pm. But as winners know that carbohydrates make you tired, he enjoys a green smoothie from his three-week juice diet, which he has just bought for several hundred euros.

On his way to a networking appointment (he is always open to synergies), Uwe doesn't waste his time, but instead listens to a podcast by a guru he admires (at 2.7x speed, of course), who reminds him again and again that you will only get anywhere if you are prepared to go the extra mile. Since he still has some time before the appointment, he practices the Wim Hof breathing technique, which enables him to deal with his stressful everyday life as an entrepreneur in spe even more efficiently.

After an afternoon that was as exhausting as it was fruitless, Uwe doesn't call it a day, because he is an eagle after all. Instead, he logs into the weekly Inner Circle Call of his exclusive winner mastermind group, which is offered by his guru and of which he has recently become a member for an annual fee of just 35 thousand euros.

Uwe is now struggling to pay his rent on time, but the guru assured him that he would never get anywhere if he didn't invest in his personal development. After the meeting, he still has no idea how to make more money, but he has bought the coach's brand new online course, which was only available that evening at a special price of €2,999.

To round off the day, Uwe treats himself to a session with his brand new Mind Spa app before quickly reaching for his success diary shortly after midnight to summarize the day in writing. But he has to hurry, because in just a few hours it will be 5 a.m. again and the stress will start all over again.

The pressure for self-optimization is omnipresent

Yes, I admit that I have exaggerated some things to make things clearer. But doesn't all this sound a little familiar to you? Many people feel the same way as Uwe. Regardless of their current life situation. It affects the student just as much as the solopreneur, the manager, the sales representative or the single father. No wonder, because the world is turning faster and faster, and the pace, intensity and unpredictability of external changes and global crises have increased massively in recent years.

Algorithms determine our everyday lives, there is a suitable software for every problem today and a not exactly small number of jobs will be taken over by artificial intelligence or machines in the future. More and more people instinctively sense that we are at a decisive turning point in history. And this development has led to buzzwords such as Change management, transformation and personal development have become omnipresent. Because the realization has taken hold that you can either jump on the bandwagon of change or find yourself lonely and abandoned on the platform at some point.

I'm not a machine after all: Exaggerated self-optimization

This is where exaggerated self-optimization comes into play. As gratifying as it may seem at first glance that actively dealing with change is becoming an ever greater priority, the concrete results of these efforts are often fatal. This is because the traditional seminars, programs, training courses and books dedicated to the topic are all based on a fundamental premise: The way things have been done up to now is unfortunately no longer sufficient. What is needed are new ideas, new approaches and, above all, one thing: the development of one's own personality through continuous change.

But what do the subsequent efforts usually look like? Open any self-help book and you will always find the same messages communicated more or less subtly:

You are missing something.
You are not good enough.
You have an urgent need for optimization.

Models, techniques and tools are then proposed as solutions, all of which lead to a flawless, extraordinary and, above all, perfect future. And the promises sound quite tempting. Everyone can live their dream, have a well-paid job, be fit and healthy, have happy relationships, be financially secure and free from worries. If only, yes, if only you followed the experts' instructions perfectly and down to the last detail.

The treacherous messages of self-help books

Of course, the catch in this approach is immediately obvious. We humans are simply not perfect. We have our weaknesses, we are not always as disciplined as we would like to be and our Motivation is in the cellar from time to time. And when imperfect people strive for a perfect state, disaster is inevitable.

Triggered by the suggestions of the „You are missing something, you are not good enough and you are in urgent need of optimization“ you get caught up in self-optimization mania. You desperately try to reduce your own weak points. To fight the status quo with all your might. To rebuild your own personality. Leaving nothing to chance and controlling, monitoring and optimizing every single detail of your life. Driven by tools, methods and regular reminders of the need for optimization, you gradually develop into a human lab rat that is so busy trying to eliminate the supposed deficiency that at some point you lose sight of the actual reason why you started all this effort in the first place: To lead a fulfilled and contented life worthy of the name.

Out of the self-optimization mania - into balance

Hand on heart, with all the changes in your everyday life, the twenty-third professional change process in five years and the numerous crises that we have to deal with more and more frequently, haven't you already thought: „I've had enough now, I'm not a machine“? If so, I would like to invite you to say goodbye to the self-optimization mania, to give in to the Mindset revolution and embark on a completely new path as a change rebel.

I have set myself the goal of breaking this negative spiral and channeling the immense power of change back in a healthy and fulfilling direction. To convey a modern approach to change that meets the challenges of the present and succeeds in taking the future by the horns. Without coercion. Without pressure. But with the right balance of ease, fulfillment and the desire to shape your own life. I have explained exactly how to do this in my brand new book “The mindset revolution” described.

Making change easy - how change management succeeds

For many years, my company's claim has been: Making change simple. I love the ambiguity of the phrase simply, because depending on whether your emphasis is on the word simply or make, it has a completely different meaning. But what exactly is hidden behind the philosophy of making change simple? This is precisely the question we want to address in detail in this article. Would you like us to get started right away?

Change is what you make of it

Imagine for a moment that you were living in a of my lectures are sitting in the audience. Hopefully you have already laughed a lot and heard me announce an experiment in which a glass of water plays the main role, which I hold up in the air with an outstretched arm. The following thought may immediately cross your mind: „Oh, here comes the old hat, whether the glass is half full or half empty.“

But that's not the point at all. I'm results-oriented and I'm only interested in whether the water quenches my thirst. Instead, I'll ask you another question: „If I hold the glass this way, how heavy do you think it is?“ After hearing your answer, I get to the real point. „You know what, the absolute weight doesn't matter at all. The only thing that matters is how long I stay in that position. If I only hold the glass for a short time, it's not a problem. If I held it for an hour, my arm would start to shake at some point and I'd have really bad sore muscles tomorrow. And if I held it like that all day, I wouldn't be able to think about anything else, I'd be in a lot of pain and my arm would be paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change. But the longer I hold it, the heavier it gets.“

Make change easy: Focus is key

Every day, we find ourselves in dozens of situations in which we are confronted with a wide variety of Changes are confronted with. And it makes a huge difference how you deal with it. Whether you think: „Oh no, that's definitely not going to work.“ Or whether you opt for the alternative: „Oh yes, let's tackle it.“ Whether you hold on to the glass with all your might or put it down again in time. But whenever the Decision is particularly challenging, it springs into action with regularity.

That nasty little voice in your head that appears in the form of a little devil on your shoulder and explains to you in great detail and seductively why your plan is not a particularly good idea, what can go wrong and why it's best not to try it at all. You know those doubts, worries and fears that come with change? That was a rhetorical question, of course, because we all have them. And it's good that they are there because they have an important function. They protect us from making too much of a fool of ourselves.

But as with the glass of water, it's all about how you handle it. If you only have a little doubt, that's perfectly okay. But if you carry your doubts around with you for longer, they will eventually turn into worries. And if you worry all day long, you will become anxious. And fear paralyzes. So the message of the metaphor is simple. Successful change does not depend on the problems you are confronted with, but solely on how you react to them.

Because whatever challenge you face, you alone decide how long you hold on to your glass and when you put it down again. I would like you to internalize this insight right from the start: Change is not what happens around you. It is how you deal with it. It is your Attitude.

In moments of doubt, it is even more important. When everything goes perfectly, everyone can shine. We all know plenty of fair-weather captains. But how good are you when things don't go as they should? Do you moan about how hard you have it and how unfair the world is? Or do you decide to make the best of it, say yes to Au and actively change? Even if the situation seems difficult, you usually can't change the external circumstances.

Why excuses prevent sustainable change

The only thing you can influence is how you react to it and when you put your metaphorical glass down again. To help you do this successfully, this article will give you some ideas and impulses to help you create a Mindset that you can use to make change easy, even under difficult conditions.

Of course, I am very aware that I will also have to contend with different variations of the nasty little voice in your head. Because whenever it comes to simple solutions, the little devil on your shoulder likes to say things like „I've heard it before“, „I've already tried it“ or „That may work for others, but it definitely won't work for me.“ If you should catch yourself thinking one of these or similar thoughts in the course of reading, please remind yourself to put the glass down again in good time. I know what you're thinking: „But Ilya, it doesn't happen that often with me.“ But this search for excuses and reasons why something doesn't work, disguised as an innocent inner voice, appears on all kinds of faces. And many people have told themselves their own excuses so often that they no longer realize how much their own resistance to change is already pronounced.

Too much change at once: the phenomenon of change fatigue

Added to this is a growing fatigue with change. When I recently told an entrepreneur friend of mine that I had another book about successful Shift he frowned and remarked critically: „Oh come on, everything there is to say about change has already been said.“ And you know what? He wasn't entirely wrong.

Each of us has probably read dozens of books on this topic, internalized metaphors about mice, penguins or icebergs, learned strategies for time management, happiness or Motivation and nodded my head vigorously as I read it. But which of this wealth of information did you actually put into practice? In seminars, lectures and team-building measures, you have learned how change works in theory. You put your hand to your chin and laughed heartily when the seminar leader pointed out to you that he had said nose loud and clear (if you don't know what I'm talking about now, you were lucky and probably haven't sat in one of the typical, but mostly interchangeable change training sessions).

You have felt what it feels like when you fold your hands and change the thumb on top. And you probably know many more theoretical exercises that you have done to familiarize yourself with the topic of Shift approach. But as a participant in one of my own seminars recently said to me: „Change? I've already tried that. It was far too complicated for me.“

The great dilemma of successful change

And that's the crux of the matter. Because there is a crucial difference between knowing and being able to do. Between thinking complicated and doing simple. And this difference leads to a major dilemma. On the one hand, the rate of change is increasing rapidly. At work, at home, on the road, simply everywhere. Sometimes we are surrounded by so many unexpected challenges that we don't know exactly which one we should tackle first.

At the same time, theoretical knowledge on how to deal with change is exploding. The amount of information available is increasing exponentially. No matter what know-how you need today, knowledge is usually just a mouse click away. And it doesn't matter what it is, there are detailed experience reports on really every subject area and you can draw on the entire swarm intelligence of humanity. Try it out. If you enter the search term „How can you...?“ in Google, you will get 1.7 billion hits. There's nothing you can't learn on the Internet. So everything should be perfect, right? Situation recognized, problem solved, hook on.

However, the increasing knowledge is by no means a relief, but has become a major hurdle for many. Because before it can even be implemented, all the energy is used to sort through the flood of information and find the needle in the haystack with which to implement the philosophy of “making change easy”. The result: the notorious procrastination.

Simple does not mean easy, but „not complex“

You put off a planned change until you have resigned yourself to the fact that „it's just complicated“ and that you can't change anything after all. Don't you know this from people in your personal environment? Maybe even from yourself? I am always amazed at how complicated some people make dealing with change. They analyze the problem down to the last detail, develop multi-stage implementation plans or study all the research findings of the last twenty years.

But the more complicated a path is, the less likely it is that you will actually follow it. And because you have heard so often how difficult and complex change is, at some point you believe it yourself and have found a wonderfully plausible excuse as to why you can't change after all. However, if you make dealing with your own challenges a complicated matter, failure is almost inevitable.

When I was a department store manager, a new change program was presented at almost every management meeting. They had one thing in common: great titles, usually over 200 PowerPoint slides and 7 stages of change, each of which had 9 sub-steps that we were supposed to work through in 3 phases. During one of these conferences, I once sat next to a colleague from the Ruhr region. While everyone else was slumped in their seats, he still looked really enthusiastic, even on slide 175. So I asked him: „You always nod so knowingly, do you know how to implement that?“ And he said: „Nah, far too complicated, but it looks so good“. I don't know about you, but I find it's hard to get excited about a change that's complicated. And it's impossible to get other people excited about something that you can't get excited about yourself.

The foundations of successful change

But if it doesn't work that way, how does successful change work? The bottom line is always the same, simple principles and a large portion of common sense. But don't you know people who can't find the solution to their problem because they are so busy looking for complicated excuses as to why they can't change? I wish you had been there one day when Mrs. T. sat in my office for a coaching session. I looked her in the eye for a long time and then said: „Mrs. T., you are thirty-eight years old, a successful businesswoman and, according to your own statement, you have already undergone 152 hours of therapy. Yet you still don't feel able to give a presentation in your company?“

She blushed slightly and replied: „Oh, Mr. Grzeskowitz, it's just complicated. I've tried so many things, but I always get big red spots on my throat, my mouth gets dry and I start to stutter.“ I nodded and then asked the question of all questions: „I see, Mrs. T. Are you ready to change something?“ Her answer said it all: „You know, Mr. Grzeskowitz, I would actually like to change. But it's not that easy. If you want, we can give it a try.“

So I wanted to. But I sensed that she didn't really want to. Nevertheless, we worked intensively together and managed to solve her problem in just one session. After just ninety minutes, she was able to speak freely in front of a group. Without red spots. Without a dry mouth. And without stuttering. But if you now think that Mrs. T. broke out in jubilation because of this, then you are mistaken. Instead, she kept saying: „It can't be that simple. No, there's no way it can be that easy. It certainly won't last long.“
And she was right. Because exactly three weeks later, the phone rings. It's Mrs. T.. And with a certain satisfaction in her voice, she announces: „Well, Mr. Grzeskowitz, you know what? I had to present the quarterly figures to the sales force today. I could barely get a word out and the red marks are back. Ha, I told you right away that change isn't that easy!“

Change is always as easy as you make it

Why was that? I have no idea, maybe she enjoyed the attention or loved being able to tell others about her problem (this is a big hobby of many people). But as much as I would have liked Mrs. T. to change, she just didn't want to and preferred to stay in her cozy comfort zone. She was so fixated on the need for a complex solution that she hadn't even considered the obvious simplicity. But think back to your own changes that you have mastered sustainably in the past. What was the common denominator? That's right, it was always simple solutions and approaches that produced the best results.

You can see how easy it can be by looking at a form of change that probably all of us are familiar with. I'm talking about smoking. More specifically, quitting. It's always the same pattern there. While some are successful by simple means, others struggle every day anew with a supposedly complicated problem. Have you ever successfully quit smoking? Do you know anyone who has managed it?

I used to smoke myself. As a coach, I have also carried out many smoking cessation programs and given dozens of seminars on this topic. My experience can be summarized simply. The bottom line is that there are only ever two categories of smokers. There are those who have doubts from the outset as to whether they can really make it. Those who worry about withdrawal symptoms, weight gain and side effects. Who then quit for a few days, but start again at the first opportunity. Who tell themselves so often how complicated it is until they believe it themselves. And then don't change, but continue to smoke. And of course moan about how much they would like to stop if it wasn't so complicated.

But how do the millions of ex-smokers who have successfully managed to change do it? Are you ready for the hard truth? Here it is. You've made a decision and quit smoking. Just like that. From one day to the next. From one moment to the next. Some people need a little help in the form of coaching, a seminar or a book. But then you simply quit and are a non-smoker from one moment to the next.

I can already hear the objections of the little devil on your shoulder: „But Ilya, that might be so easy if you only smoke a little. After all, I smoke a whole pack a day.“ I'm sorry, but it doesn't matter how much you smoke. Even heavy smokers stop smoking by simply quitting. It takes longer for the body to detox, but the principle is the same. However, many people have been told so often how difficult and complicated change is that they no longer have the idea that the best solution is still the simple one.

Make a real decision for change

I became very aware of this one summer when I watched my then four-year-old daughter Emma discover a large carton of water ice on the top shelf of our fridge. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, these are those artificial water sticks with woodruff, cola or lemon flavor that you put in the fridge and then turn into ice.

In any case, my daughter was completely crazy about these things. But she had a problem. She wasn't tall enough and couldn't reach them. What do you think she did now? That's right, she moved heaven and hell to get to the ice cream. In the end, she stood on a wobbly construction made from a chair, two cushions and a saucepan. And when she proudly raised her trophy in the air, I felt that the effort had been worth it. She had brought about the change because she really wanted the ice cream. She would have done anything to get it. And it just happened. I didn't have to tell her beforehand: „Watch out Emma, this is a really complicated problem, you should prepare yourself well. There's a revolutionary change model that a professor at the University of Tübingen has developed. But be sure to take a personality test beforehand so that you can find out what type of change agent you are. And be sure to attend a behavioral training course where you learn the best angle to open the fridge.“

She didn't need all that. She just did it. Because she motivated and had found a simple way to achieve her goal. And this leads to an important insight: whether you are getting an ice cream from the top shelf of the fridge, quitting smoking or facing a completely different challenge. Simply making change happen.

Change becomes easy when you make change easy.

Albert Einstein once said: „Make things as simple as possible. But not simpler.“ In this article, I would like to remind you that successful change is always based on simple ideas and solutions. But allow me to make one crucial point. Even though I so often emphasize the word simple, I don't mean easy, effortless or without any effort at all. Quite the opposite. Fate can be pretty tough and challenges you every day to see if you really mean it.

Life is not a pony farm. It is often unfair, often hurtful and not always fair. If you want to change under these circumstances, you can't do it without doing something about it. Success doesn't happen by itself. And I know that there are hundreds of books and many seminar leaders who promise you that you only have to wish hard enough for change and it will fall from the sky. But if that were the case, why are so many people sitting at home on the couch in their sweatpants, having already watched „The Secret“ eight times, sending ten wishes an hour to the universe, and wondering why they still have a mediocre job, why they've been single for years, and why the Ferrari they ordered from the universe is still a rickety Opel Corsa in the garage?

Because success is always a combination of hard work and first-class quality. Because it doesn't work without action and implementation. Because change is simple, but by no means easy. Therefore, one thing is particularly important to me: that you take your life into your own hands and actively change. Because if, like the famous ostrich with its head in the sand, you trust that everything will work out, then at some point you could find yourself in a situation where you are changed by external circumstances. And these changes will most likely not be in line with your values, goals and dreams, but with those of other people. And that might not be the best prospect for the future, is it?

Man versus machine - the most important success factor in change management

Man versus machine: the most important success factor in change management

Man against machine. If you believe the reports in the media, this battle will determine the future. Often, even real horror scenarios á la Terminator in which robots will take over the entire world. But if we disregard the fantasies of Hollywood films for a moment, the question is certainly relevant.

Because in times characterized by artificial intelligence, ever smarter machines and rapidly accelerating software, the question increasingly arises: where does all this development actually leave people? In this article, I would like to share my perspective and, of course, provide an answer.

Man and machine: shaping the future together

As Keynote Speaker I have the great pleasure of regularly being invited to exciting conferences and congresses. As I often speak at the end of such events, I occasionally have the opportunity to listen to the previous speakers. This is pure trend scouting for me, and I fill entire notebooks with my thoughts, ideas and plans on these occasions. In the last six months alone, I have fascinating lectures on artificial intelligence, augmented reality, electromobility, the use of drones, drone defense, cybercrime, cybersecurity, voice control and the future of robotics.

The downside of digitalization

Although opinions vary widely, a common thread runs through the forecasts of all the experts: We are only just at the beginning of technological developments that will dramatically change our lives. There has long been an app for everything, everyday life is controlled via our smartphones and more and more processes are being taken over by artificial intelligence. I am fascinated by what is already possible today, and I think of all the opportunities and possibilities that will present themselves in the near future with an almost childlike joy.

But where there is light, there is always shadow, and for many people I have the well-founded suspicion that technology no longer makes their lives easier, but that they have become slaves to their various machines. They are available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year and check their emails every ten minutes, even on family vacations. And haven't you already experienced a scene in which two people sit together in a café for over an hour and don't speak a word to each other, but constantly send each other WhatsApps, text messages or messages via smartphone (okay, text messages less so, because nobody uses this medium anymore, right?)?

Man or machine: who will be more important in the future?

This raises a crucial question for the future: who will win the battle between man and machine? Or, to put it in slightly more differentiated terms: will humans be replaced by machines in terms of importance? My prediction is as follows: Absolutely not. We will live in a world that is facilitated, but not dominated, by technology and machines. What do I mean by that? By no means that digital progress will not continue at the same rapid pace as before. On the contrary, I even expect the pace to increase. However, the decisive factor that many future experts tend to forget is people with their unique potential and skills.

Despite all the digitalization, disruption and technological progress, I maintain that people will be the most important factor in the future. Of course, robots, artificial intelligence and technical innovations will shake up the way we live, love and work in the coming years. But for all the importance of this development, we are all human beings and long for closeness, exchange and personal communication. So let me repeat this sentence once again:

In a future characterized by digitalization, disruption and technological progress, people will be the most important success factor.

People as a success factor in times of change

This has several effects. The quality of your inner circle will have a decisive impact on your general happiness and satisfaction. And in a professional context, your employees, colleagues and team members are not only the guarantee for excellent quality and outstanding results, but above all the biggest differentiating factor in an increasingly competitive environment. So things are finally getting human again. And I think that's really good. Because the team is sacred, and only together will we succeed in mastering the challenges of the future.

So let's change our perspective. Away from personal motives and towards joint successes. Away from hard efforts as lone fighters and towards successful teamwork. Away from the ego and towards the we. Do you feel like it? Then let's get started. Together, because as the Brazilian soccer star Pele said: „The only way to win is as a team!“

[cp_popup display=“inline“ style_id=“27000″ step_id = „1“][/cp_popup]

We are change, or: the team is sacred

Lapland. Minus twelve degrees. The glaring sun is blinding and I can feel an unforgettable cocktail of happy hormones flowing through my body. In front of me, eight beautiful huskies pull my sled, which glides seemingly weightlessly through the majestic tundra. What fascinates me even more than the breathtaking landscape is the way the sled dogs work together. Because although there is a very clear hierarchy in the pack, every single husky knows that they can only be successful together as a team. Each animal contributes its individual strengths, learns from its teammates and unconditionally jumps into the breach if one of the others has a brief phase of weakness.

We humans can learn a lot from them, especially the powerful energy that is created when individual personalities take responsibility at their place, but at the same time work together, support each other and work together. If there's one thing I've learned over the last few years, it's the power of a motivated, competent and reliable team. As much as I believe in the importance of the individual, without the right people around us, we are all only half as successful. It doesn't matter how good you or I are, there's one sentence you should never forget, and it's best to hang it up on your desk where it's clearly visible: Nobody wins alone!

Nobody wins alone!

No one, and really no one, is capable of lasting success as a lone fighter. Okay, maybe Clint Eastwood, who rides through the Italian westerns as a lone avenger, but that's only possible in the movies. If, on the other hand, we have the right people in our team, we learn from each other, grow together and support each other. And just so we understand each other correctly, you are not a team just because you share an office, work on a joint project or work for the same company (you may also be familiar with the typical translation of team: Great. One. Another. Does it.). No, a team is something completely different. It is more than the sum of its parts.

In a real team, everyone is unconditionally there for the other team members because you are committed to a common goal. Vision and at the same time everyone takes responsibility in their own individual place. I would even go so far as to make the following assertion: Only a team gives ordinary people the opportunity to achieve extraordinary results. Feel free to put it to the test.

Even the supposed superstars are at a complete loss without their team. Sebastian Vettel needs his team of mechanics like the air he breathes. Christiano Ronaldo was only able to shine at Real Madrid because Sergio Ramos and his defensive colleagues had his back. And even the great Richard Branson, with his more than 260 companies, is only so successful because he puts his employees at the heart of his efforts. And they pay him back twice and three times over with commitment, performance and passion.

Man vs machine: the answer is clear

In a nutshell: the people you surround yourself with every day are your greatest asset and at the same time your greatest success factor on the way to a world characterized by Shift future characterized by uncertainty. The team is sacred. Both in business and in life. They are your friends, colleagues, business partners and family members. Because you can only grow as an individual personality, be successful and be a self-determined life if you operate in an environment that is characterized by mutual learning, appreciation and trust. Incidentally, exactly the same applies to companies.

I cannot emphasize this often enough. In the age of digitalization and the global networking that comes with it, the number one success factor by far is the quality of your inner circle, i.e. the people with whom you have regular and intensive contact. And this is precisely why the good old quote from speaker legend Jim Rohn still holds true today: „You become like the average of the five people you spend most of your time with.“

Success factor Inner Circle

This applies on a large scale, but also on a small scale, because we adapt the strategies, attitudes and thought patterns of our most important caregivers, as well as their favorite words and habits. In concrete terms, this means that it simply makes a huge difference which people you surround yourself with. Whether your best friends are frustrated cynics who spend all day watching RTL 2 programs on the couch at home, dragging each other down in a spiral of negativity, indifference and mediocrity. Or whether you surround yourself with successful people who create productive value for society and, in doing so, support their fellow human beings with Positivity, passion and visionary thinking.

No matter what your specific goals are, surround yourself with people who are already where you want to be. I like to take my cue from the old motto „If you're the smartest person in the room, find a new room“. And I go even further, because I have found that there are always two categories of people. There are those who slow you down, try to talk you out of your dreams and whom you can never please.

Inner Circle Meaning

From whom you hear sentences like the following: „You'd better take your make-up off“, „You'd better leave it alone“ or „That may work for others, but not for you“. The reason is usually given at the same time and is usually as follows: „You're too old, too young, too fat, too thin, too tall, too short, too poor, too inexperienced, too loud, too colorful, too different or too whatever.“ I would therefore hope that you never forget the following sentence: They are always doing something for someone.

The sooner you understand that you can never please everyone anyway, and that there will always be people looking for a dark cloud even in the sunniest of skies, the more beneficial it will be for your personal well-being. So it's best to ignore the naysayers, complainers and know-it-alls and focus on the second category instead. These are the people who support you in your personal uniqueness. Who accept you for who you are. With all your strengths and weaknesses.

Who will also give you critical feedback, but who will always support you in all your projects and encourage you unconditionally. People you can rub shoulders with and with whom you can grow together. Or to put it in a nutshell: people who are simply good for you. I myself have applied this concept very consistently, almost radically, in recent years. Because I know how precious our time in life is, I only want to spend it with positive, life-affirming and appreciative people. My Inner Circle is therefore hand-picked, and I am extremely grateful to have such great friends, colleagues and partners by my side.

Teamwork makes the Dream Work

Learning to let go - 7 ideas for successful life changes

Learning to let go is one of the most important foundations for successful and sustainable change. Everyone knows this. And yet it is so difficult, because letting go of something is one of those things that sounds very easy but is often so incredibly difficult in practice.

The art of letting go - how change works

Speaking of which, I have a question. How do you feel, do you also prick up your ears when your partner calls out your pet name in this very special tone of voice and then purrs a sentence like this „Honey, we should urgently clean out our closet“? That's exactly what my wife said to me recently. And I knew immediately what it meant. Although she spoke of „we“ and „us“, I sensed very clearly that she meant something else, namely that me urgently once mine should clean out the closet.

And indeed, when I came into the dressing room, there were already several of these big blue bags waiting for me. And so that I knew exactly what they were all about, there was a yellow post-it stuck to them: „Don't forget to take the bags to the Franciscan monastery after mucking out!“ At first, I was relieved. But when I took a look at my overfilled closet, I thought to myself: „Maybe she's not entirely wrong.“ The year before, I had given lectures all over Germany for a large fashion chain and had brought home forty-five brand new shirts during that time.

So I made a decision with a heavy heart: „Okay, I'm sorting out forty shirts!“ I started to get the good pieces out of the wardrobe one by one. But just as I was about to put the first one in the bag, the memories came flooding back: „Oh, you spent the last evening on vacation in this shirt. It was that lovely candlelit dinner.“ So I put it back in the wardrobe. Then came the second one. I sighed: „Hmm, I wore this to Emma's first day at school. Much too bad.“ Back into the wardrobe. I reminisced about every single shirt and just didn't have the heart to part with them.

Letting go is not that easy

So instead of the planned forty shirts, I only ended up sorting out seven. Namely, the ones I had never worn. But do you know what thought crossed my mind as I was about to put the last one in the bag? „What if I need these shirts again?“ Do you know such thoughts? Do you know rationally that you need to let go of something, but don't really dare to do so?

This is simply because feelings play a much greater role in these cases than the rational mind. You remember the beautiful moments and the significance these things once had in your life. But everything has its time. And while I was sitting in front of the bags, I had to think about the movie Fight Club in which Edward Norton says a sentence that really inspired me: „We own things until things start to own us.“

There's a lot to it, isn't there? Most of the stuff we've accumulated over the years we just have because it's there. We don't use it, nor does it have any value to us. We store it away for possible use in the future, which will never happen anyway. Nevertheless, we don't dare to let things go. And that applies even more to change.

Success means knowing what worked yesterday

Most people don't have that much trouble accepting new ideas. Rather, it is the fear of letting go of the old ones. The famous comfort zone sends its regards. But how can you break new ground if you do the same thing tomorrow that you did today, yesterday and the day before yesterday? Courageous Decisions are always fixed. Problem or solution. Hesitation or Transform. Complicated or simple. Stand still or break new ground. As often as possible, dare to let go of the things that prevent you from taking the next step in your development. Because being successful today means one thing above all: knowing what worked yesterday.

That was my biggest challenge in the early days of my career. Independence. I thought I could just carry on as before. But just because I was a successful manager in a large corporation didn't mean that I could also be a successful entrepreneur. So I had to learn one thing the hard way: Customers never care how great you were yesterday. They are only interested in: How good are you today? Yesterday's success prevents tomorrow's success.

You will find this pattern everywhere. Don't you know those people who dismiss any ideas for change with the following words? „I've been doing this job here for 20 years. I know exactly how the hare runs.“ But this thinking is exclusively backward-looking. Peter Drucker is regarded as the greatest management thinker of the last century. In his standard work called Management he wrote down a very interesting sentence: „Success makes the behaviors that created it obsolete.“ Karl Lagerfeld summarized this even better in a recent interview: „The minute you think you're great, you've made it, it's over. There's no credit for the past.“ Or in my somewhat simpler words: yesterday's success prevents tomorrow's success. Because nothing makes us more comfortable than past successes.

Letting go Psychology: That's why it's so hard

If you have the courage and let go of the things that prevent you from growing and becoming better, then amazing things will happen. Because in this way you can apply one of the universal laws of Shift use. If you have built your general philosophy of life on abundance thinking, then you have the necessary confidence that any vacuum that arises will be replaced by something better, something more beautiful.

However, what sounds so simple is not always easy for me either. You wouldn't believe how much doubt I sometimes have when I turn down a particular order, let go of an important line of business or give up on a promising idea. Thoughts like „I'll probably starve to death“ or „I'll never find another customer that good“ immediately come to mind. But over time, I have also let go of something else, namely the thought that I would be free of doubt. Everyone doubts. You just as much as I do. It's not only human, but it never ends.

If you think that successful people never doubt, then you are very much mistaken. The only difference is that successful people know exactly when to put their glass down. And despite all the doubts, it follows the same pattern every time. Whenever I make a difficult decision and let go, trusting in the abundance, the resulting vacuum is filled with something better. I get more reliable customers, receive more lucrative orders and make even more and, above all, more sustainable sales.

Learning to let go: trust the universe

Good things don't always come immediately, nor do they always come from the direction you would expect. Life sometimes takes convoluted and winding paths in these matters. But with a certain amount of trust in the power of a vacuum, a gap that has arisen will always be replaced by something better. „But, Ilya, what exactly am I supposed to let go of now?“ That's a good question. And I can't answer it for you. Often it's just one thing that you have to let go of in order to set off a small avalanche of positive developments.

The nasty thing is, however, that you always have a bad feeling before making such decisions. No wonder, because most of the things you need to let go of most urgently have taken up an important place in your life. Your whole inner self is resisting such moments and shouts: „No way, this is important. We still need that.“

But the changes you are most afraid of are the ones that bring the biggest breakthroughs. And just as my gut feeling in my dressing room told me that the time for shirts had come, you also sense that a part of you is protesting loudly, but that you should act anyway. In such cases, it helps to train your intuition, which you can almost always rely on.

Letting go of what doesn't make you happy

So let's get to the crucial question of this article: What is the one thing in your life that you should let go of? You have probably sensed what it is for a long time, but so far you have found many good arguments as to why letting go seems to be out of the question. Nevertheless, this quiet inner voice keeps coming back and surfaces at regular intervals.

Am I right? If you still have doubts (and you will, because it's perfectly normal), go deep inside yourself and ask yourself the following question: „What is the one thing in my life that I should let go of?“ Now pay attention to the answer that comes to mind first. No matter how unrealistic or unreasonable the idea may sound, it is very likely to be the very thing you should let go of at that moment.

Do you need a few more ideas on what you can let go of? A long time ago, I drew up a list for myself in which I summarized the things that are best suited to being critically reviewed and questioned on a regular basis. Because if you want to learn to let go, then the big goal is nothing other than to think critically, remain mentally flexible and do everything you can to escape the comfort of mental no-man's land. Although I should be practiced in these things by now, I still often find myself taking the easy way out with all the lectures, appointments and everyday tasks and preferring to create my own Comfort zone expand.

7 things in life that you can let go of

That's why I have fixed dates in my calendar when I critically question the supposed facts of life, review my strategies and adjust my goals. I do this once a month and even for a whole weekend at the turn of the year. Letting go is never easy, by the way, but the more often you experience the fascinating effects, the more confidence you will have in your decisions. Shall we get started? Here are my personal suggestions for letting go.

Learning to let go of perfection

For successful Change management it is much more important to take action than to wait for perfection. Mistakes happen anyway, plans go awry and there are lots of big obstacles along the way waiting for you to clear them out of the way. I have also learned one thing in my job as Keynote Speaker I have learned that perfection always seems a little suspicious. Admitting small mistakes and being open about weaknesses, on the other hand, can open many doors. After all, people like people best, not robots. Let go of the idea of wanting to be perfect.

Learning to let go of beliefs and convictions

This is where it is hardest to let go, because there is nothing in the world we like to defend as much as our own opinions, beliefs and convictions. For this reason, people only change when they want to and not when they have to. So regularly question your convictions critically and with an open mind. A good start is always the following: „Is this belief really my own or have I adopted it from my environment, other people or the media?

And if it is my own, does it bring me closer to my goals or does it slow me down?“ Let go of limiting beliefs and convictions adopted from others.

Learning to let go of expectations

I can't repeat it often enough: Life is not a pony farm and certainly not fair. Neither are people. And you can't please everyone. Let go of your expectations that everything will be fair or that opportunities and possibilities will be handed to you on a silver platter. Let go of other people's expectations and do your own thing. And to do this, you should significantly raise your own standards.

Learning to let go of negative people

Your Inner Circle determines success or failure. This applies to all areas of life. For your career, your health and your finances. It simply makes a difference whether you spend your time with positive and innovative people or whether you sit at the regulars' table with beer-swilling energy vampires whose lives are determined by envy, resentment and frustration.

I know from my own experience how difficult it is for us to let go of people who once played an important role in our lives. But here, too, there is a time for everything. And if you are developing as a person but the people around you are standing still, you should move on at your own pace. The more successful you become, the more often you will have a painful experience: Many friends and acquaintances do not want you to become successful at all.

And if you do give them the benefit of the doubt, then please don't be any more successful than you are. This is not even meant in a bad way, but just the outwardly visible behavior that results from thinking in terms of lack. How can you avoid such experiences? Surround yourself exclusively with possible thinkers who support and encourage you on your path. And this also includes critical feedback. But please all Get rid of negative people in your environment and trust that exciting personalities will fill the gaps.

Learning to let go of customers and orders

Do you also have that particular customer who hardly brings in any sales but constantly wants special treatment? For whom nothing works straight away, who still has a demand, and for whom you have to put in a lot of extra effort every time? Dare to say no and let go. Instead, focus your strength and energy on the customers who never nag, complain or grumble, but who appreciate your services, generate sales and are happy to have you as a partner at their side.

And believe me, for one difficult customer there are already five others just waiting to do business with you. And these are the kind of customers who would benefit from an exchange of Values are characterized.

Learning to let go of things and stuff

Don't worry, this won't be the hundredth call for a life without possessions or a moral sermon about how reprehensible it is if you like to consume. Rather, I want to raise your awareness of how much of the stuff you have accumulated is either no longer of value to you or is not being used. There is an interesting article in the Journal of Consumer Psychology from 2011, which bears the apt title: „If money doesn't buy you happiness, then you probably aren't spending it right.“

If you enjoy beautiful things, expensive watches, fast cars or luxurious clothes, then buy them and enjoy them. If you are happy and content by nature, then these consumer goods will make your life even more beautiful. Only if you need consumption in order to be happy should you urgently rethink your basic philosophy. But how many things are there in your cupboards, basements or garages that have simply been there for years and that you haven't used for a long time?

Sort out mercilessly here. What you didn't use last year, you won't use next year either. Stuff that is only there because it was once expensive or is linked to a memory only takes up space and energy for the things that are really important to you. Nobody is saying that you should throw everything in the bin. Sell things on eBay, give things away to friends or donate them to charity. But the most important thing is that you let go and create space and freedom for new things. Give it a try, I guarantee you will be thrilled with the effect.

Learning to let go of goals and dreams

Have you been carrying this one dream around with you for years? Are you also pursuing a specific goal that you simply haven't had the time to achieve? Then you should think about whether you should let it go. Some Goals and dreams are like the old shirts cluttering up your closet. They cost you strength, energy and time. Above all, however, they block the space you need for your important dreams and your current goals. When in doubt, always remember: everything in life has its time. And there is a reason why you haven't done these things yet. Dare to let go and pursue the projects that are important to you today.

Letting go does not mean getting rid of

Good, have you been able to get some ideas? I am aware that we have taken a very brief look at the art of letting go. It's not for nothing that there are entire books devoted to just this one topic. But as is so often the case, the things that work best are usually those that are formulated to the point, and I hope you have gotten a sense of the power that learning to let go can have. The bottom line is that it really only comes down to one action: let go of what's holding you down. That's all it is.

So that you don't find this so difficult in future, I'll give you the crucial tip at the very end. I have discovered why so many people are world champions at holding on, but find it so incredibly difficult to let go. As with all other changes, in this case it is also down to evaluation. So here comes an impulse that can decisively change your approach to the art of letting go. You should either write this sentence down or internalize it so well that you never forget it again:

Letting go does not mean getting rid of.

This realization has given my life a completely new quality. It can do the same for yours. When you let go of something, it never means that you are throwing something away. Quite the opposite. Letting go only means that you are no longer holding on to something.

Being able to let go - the perspective that changes everything

When a falcon is kept in a cage, all it can think about is how it can escape. But if the falconer lets go and gives the animal its freedom, the bird always returns to the place where it feels most comfortable. And this leads to an important insight: if you have to hold on to something with all your might, then this action is primarily driven by the fear of loss. The thing you are clinging to so tightly actually left you a long time ago.

If instead you dare to let go of old ideas, beliefs or even people, you will make an astonishing realization. Some of these things will disappear forever. And that's a good thing, because everything has its time. But there will also be some things that come back to you of their own accord. That one idea that just won't let go. That conviction that keeps coming back to you. And that very special person who wants to make a new start with you.

That's the great thing about learning to let go. As soon as you stop holding on tightly and allow things the freedom to come back to you on their own, you will feel what really matters and is important for your life. Dare to let go and create space for ideas, thoughts and people who support you in achieving your greatness and living your dreams.

Learning to make decisions - 7 ingenious tips for more clarity in life

Learning to make decisions. It sounds so simple. And yet it is so difficult. Management Guru Peter Drucker once said: „If you see a successful company anywhere, it's because someone made a courageous decision at some point.“ How right he was with this statement. And we can hear something else between the lines. Every successful entrepreneur is always a good decision-maker.

Or, conversely, if you are not achieving the desired results in your life, then it is reasonable to assume that you need to work on your decision-making skills. Wondering why? Quite simply because the ability to make decisions is the most important quality of a successful entrepreneur, manager and basically every single person.

Making the right decisions

So making decisions is much more difficult in reality than in theory. After all, how many people do you know who are world champions at announcing, planning and making Changes but then regularly fail to implement them? How often have you yourself had a great idea, wanted to make the right decisions but were unable to put them into practice? It may surprise you now, but most people don't have an implementation problem, they have a decision-making problem. It's the result of wishy-washy values and the associated lack of clear priorities.

The consequences are fatal: over time, you get used to the idea that other people will make the decisions for you. The boss, your colleagues, your partner, your neighbors, the waiter, the sales clerk or the ever-popular and never really definable entity called “those up there”.

Making decisions Psychology: The mirror of your own priorities

Almost everyone is trusted to be able to make decisions for themselves. Only you avoid them like the devil avoids holy water. You can recognize these indecisive people very well by their language, because they use their favourite words „actually“, “possibly”, ”maybe„ and “perhaps" remarkably often. After all, if you are merely thinking about whether you could possibly decide at a certain point in time whether you actually want to change, then you don't have to commit yourself at all! And most people like that.

But why is that even the case? Why does nobody want to commit themselves anymore? Why do many people find it so difficult to make a decision? On the one hand, your own values naturally play a central role. If I don't know what my priorities in life are, then I can't act accordingly. If I'm insecure inside, then it's not possible to make clear decisions on the outside. But in the vast majority of cases, it's not that someone can't make a decision. Rather, it's because they want to.

Making decisions means making a commitment

Because there is a central feature of every decision: Whenever you decide for something, you are also deciding against something. With all the consequences, sacrifices and conflicts. But also with the corresponding results. With every single decision, you weigh up inwardly where your priorities lie. It is always a question of what is more important to you. It's always an „either or“. Would you like a few examples?

  • You can either have the freedom of your own company or the (supposed) security of a permanent position.
  • You can either make that all-important customer call or call for the tenth time a day on LinkedIn check the status messages.
  • You can either train for your dream body early in the morning or spend an extra hour in a warm, cozy bed.
  • You can either plan your next career move or spend the evening with your buddies in the pub.
  • You can either work overtime for the important project or enjoy the beneficial effects of ten hours' sleep.
  • You can do everything you can to get that long-awaited job as head of department, or you can insist on finishing work on time.
  • You can enjoy a romantic vacation with your partner or travel to the Ballermann with your friends.
  • You can spend time with your children or sit in the office until ten in the evening.
  • You can work on turning your dreams into reality or enjoy the nightlife of your city.
  • You can either learn to make decisions or you will experience a permanent state of dissatisfaction.

Making decisions is not that easy - but you can learn to do it

When making decisions, the key question is always: „What is more important to you?“ If you can answer this for yourself, then you won't find it difficult to commit yourself. The more you can fall back on powerful values and the more you can create a sustainable Motivation the more willing you will be to do everything you can to achieve your goals. And because this always means work, discipline and commitment, very few people are prepared to accept these consequences.

But why is that? We now live in a society that is characterized by arbitrariness. It is with great concern that I observe the trend among the masses to dance at as many weddings as possible and not want to make any decisions. And so you do a bit of everything, but you don't do anything right. You muddle through your life, have no major low points, but no highlights either. The classic definition of mediocrity. And if you do get up the courage to make a decision, it's usually not a decision at all, because most people are extremely casual about this term. On closer inspection, however, many a decision turns out to be more of a pious wish that is wistfully directed towards heaven.

[cp_popup display=“inline“ style_id=“27000″ step_id = „1“][/cp_popup]

Real decisions are not pious wishes

Please don't let this fool you, because a real decision is something completely different. It means making a commitment, dedicating yourself wholeheartedly to the consequences of this action and not letting setbacks deter you from your path. Making a real decision means making a commitment. To decide in favor of something. And at the same time deciding against the alternative. It means making a conscious choice. And many people shy away from making this clear and consistent choice, preferring instead to be guided by external circumstances. Or worse still, by the decisions of other people.

And by that I don't just mean the really landmark decisions in life. No, it usually starts with the little things in everyday life. When shopping, eating, on the subway or at the family table. But if you allow yourself to be guided by the general arbitrariness of even the most mundane things, you will fail all the more when it comes to the big decisions in life. Because the bottom line is that every single change always begins with a clear and irrevocable choice. The decision to make the change, to set off and enjoy the ride on the rollercoaster ride called life with all its ups and downs.

Decisions in life - As in small things, so in big things

So hand on heart, dear readers, how good or bad are your decision-making skills? If you're not quite sure, you can simply check. Think for a moment about your last visits to restaurants. What is your typical behavior? Is it easy for you to decide on a dish of your choice, or do you tend to beat about the bush, study the menu from front to back, only to order the same thing as your dining partner or the food recommended to you by the waiter?

How often have you answered choice questions such as „Would you like coffee or tea?“, „Shall we go to the movies or the theater?“ or „Shall we go out for Italian or Thai food?“ with a terse: „I don't care“, „You can choose“ or „I like both“?

Learn to make decisions: with these 7 ingenious tips

If you catch yourself being evasive every now and then, then you need to be careful. Because if you already have difficulties with small decisions, then it will be no different with the important things. And every successful change begins with an irrevocable decision. You can't avoid it.

But there is also good news, because it is not that difficult to train your own decision-making skills. The basis for this are powerful values that I in this article have written in great detail. These are always the basis on which everything else is based. In addition, I would like to provide you with a small guide that can be a good orientation for future decisions.

Tip #1: Decide to make a decision in any case

Sounds banal, but it's the most important step of all. From now on, there will be no more rushing around, decisions will be made. Always. For the small everyday decisions and also for the important challenges. The quicker you make your new decisiveness a habit, the better.

Tip #2: Analyze the initial situation and weigh up your options

Make an open and honest analysis of the current situation. Don't gloss over anything, but don't make it worse than it is. The better you know your starting position, the easier it will be for you to find the possible options. And by the way, have you ever noticed that you always have at least three options in every situation? Feel free to put it to the test.

Tip #3: Accept the fact that you will never know exactly which decision is right or wrong

This realization can save you a lot of brooding. Accept that you will never know in advance which decision will be the right one. Unfortunately, we only ever realize this afterwards. But perhaps that's a good thing, because after all, we grow from our experiences.

Tip #4: Combine your knowledge with your intuition and make a decision

This is where the unbeatable duo of „heart and mind“ comes into play. Use both your reasoning and your gut feeling. In recent years, I myself have made almost all important decisions based on my gut feeling, but I have also used my intellect. And I have done so well with this strategy because intuition can always work particularly well when it is based on a well-founded factual analysis.

Tip #5: Take full responsibility for the consequences of the decision

This is a particularly important step, especially if other people are affected by the decision. Nothing builds trust like reliability and clarity. Therefore, regardless of the results of your decision, take responsibility. For the good things, but also for those that didn't go so well.

Step #6: Stand by your decision, even if you encounter headwinds

If you take responsibility, you will be shown a lot of respect and sometimes admiration. Conversely, nothing is as despicable as constantly changing your mind. And yet many people prefer to take the easy way out and hang their flag in the wind, bending and twisting wherever they can. This is how they develop a rubber spine over time. Make one thing clear to yourself: you will never be able to please everyone anyway, and very often the right decisions are unfortunately also the unpopular ones.

Tip #7: Have the courage to revise a decision once in a while

Nevertheless, it is important to always be flexible with the results. And it can also happen that you make the wrong decision. Then it is important to react in good time and make a new decision. This not only shows that you are open and honest with yourself, but also demonstrates greatness to the outside world.

Learning to make decisions - A conclusion

I would like you to give these seven tips for making good decisions a chance and incorporate them into your everyday life as a habit. Practice making decisions as often as possible. Avoid the popular „wishy-washy behavior“ and commit yourself. On a small and large scale. Because every single change always starts with an irrevocable decision. And a correct one at that. With all the consequences. A decision that entails commitment, motivation and discipline. A decision that you are prepared to do everything necessary to put into practice.

And now I look forward to your comments and feedback on the topic of „Learning to make decisions“.

Best Ager: Die goldene Generation

Man kennt’s: Nachhaltige Veränderungen stehen an.
